Kim Ki-Duk: a farewell to a master

The news of Kim Ki-Duk's death came completely unexpectedly on 11 December this year. It shook a great many people, myself and many dear friends who love his cinema and his art among them. His death is shrouded in a mysterious veil; it seems painted by his own hand, so solitary and rarefied does it appear. He arrived in Latvia on 20 November to buy a house ahead of a new film he was due to shoot, and literally disappeared, until a Latvian hospital announced his death from complications of COVID.

My Christmas recipe

My Christmas recipe

Christmas isn't an easy time of year for many people, myself included. The festive, familial, playful, colourful atmosphere, with its good feelings all wrapped up and stacked beneath the tree, has always made me feel uncomfortable, even though over the years I've learned to live with it. Of course, in 2020 that atmosphere is felt less, for obvious reasons, but, for me at least, it doesn't change the recipe for surviving the Christmas season that I've put together over the years and that I'd like to share in today's pill.

Noise and soul: Prurient

Prurient is one of the faces of Dominick Fernow, a musician with extreme, violent, explosive sounds who, with an immense discography and a career begun at the age of 16, has changed forms and sounds, moving from almost unlistenable feedback-only records to the four-on-the-floor electronics of his project Vatican Shadow, without ever losing credibility and importance even in the darkest and most underground musical circles.

Tras el Cristal – In a Glass Cage

Tras el Cristal – In a Glass Cage

In Tras El Cristal, Augustin Villaronga's 1987 horror film, horror combined with a slow, composed aesthetic form leads to a deep conflict between language and content, between what is attractive and what is repellent, between what is beautiful and commonly considered good and what instead lies hidden within the human soul, capable of love and horror, of care and torture, of ethics and perversion.
