Self-harm
Marco Mandrino

I am not a patriot. My personal horizon is tribal, not “statist”, and even less pro-European. So, if you like, even less globalist and more exclusive.
That necessary clarification made, I wonder whether those who rush to wave Palestinian flags today and Ukrainian ones yesterday have ever waved an Italian one. I wonder what sense there is in the anger and contempt that, through speeches, marches and demonstrations, are poured out every day on their own fellow citizens in favour of people they know nothing about, except for the narratives told by third parties. I wonder whether this constant symbolic genuflecting before other cultures is really just a form of self-harming contempt for one's own. I would like to know whether these people truly believe they have anything in common with such distant peoples, and whether they are convinced that they would receive help from them, should the need arise.
Wouldn't it be better to cultivate a sense of community with those who live close by? Wouldn't it be a good idea to get to know our own culture better and so discover its greatness? Perhaps stop being fans of matches played on distant pitches and become protagonists of our own? Because it doesn't seem to me that problems are lacking here. It doesn't seem to me that there are no battles that need to be fought.
