No Wind Is Favourable

Marco Mandrino

Although nothing is certain, 12 April is considered the date of the death of one of the greatest Stoic philosophers: Seneca.

Traces of Taoism can be found in Seneca: “Fate guides the willing and drags the unwilling”, that is, our relationship with destiny (wu wei).

On the anniversary of his death, this short post is a tribute to one of the most philosophically influential beings we have ever known, and who continues to urge me not to “fight” or “submit to” the inevitable, but to accept it first and then to love it (Amor Fati), as an opportunity for growth. At the same time, he urges me not to be without direction, because “if one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.”
