Defence is always legitimate
Marco Mandrino

In Italy, more and more often, police officers and security guards end up in a world of trouble for having killed an attacker or a thief while trying to defend victims, doing exactly what they are paid to do.
We need to make up our minds. Do you want a country where it's a free-for-all, where anyone can enter other people's homes and property and attack them in any way, certain of going unpunished? Because if we keep going after those who fire, we can't then complain if, when the moment of need comes, nobody steps in. It's inevitable that it ends this way: who will take responsibility for acting any more, knowing they risk trials, prison, compensation claims and all the rest?
As far as I'm concerned, things should be simplified by starting from a clear, fixed point: who is the victim and who is the aggressor. Anyone who enters private property, anyone who tries to snatch a bag, assault, rape or commit any crime against a person or property, must know that they are risking their life. The victim is the one who suffers the attack, not the other way round. Whoever shoots in defence is on the side of the victim and should not be prosecuted.
Citizens (all of them) should have the right to defend themselves, even with the use of weapons, and the one who invades is always and in every case the guilty party, not the other way round.
Defence is always legitimate.
